Battle of Ideas and Goodenough College Port Talks

One of the key differences between the Battle of Ideas and science and literary festivals, is that the Battle was established with the express purpose of setting in motion debates that will last long beyond the festival itself. The Battle of Ideas does not end when everyone goes home. Through interrogating the key issues of our day, the aim of the Battle of Ideas is to cultivate a wider climate of intellectual exploration and to throw open new approaches to the problems confronting us in the twenty-first century. In this spirit, Goodenough College in association with the Institute of Ideas, will be hosting a series of ‘Port Talks’ in the run-up to the Battle of Ideas 2006.

As detailed below, these ‘Port Talks’ will see three leading speakers in their fields give talks about several issues that will be further explored during the festival itself. Each talk will be followed by an interactive discussion with the audience. Like the Battle itself, these Port Talks will put forward new arguments and ideas, and make a virtue of the robust exchange of different views. Each of the Port Talks will stand alone, intervening in the specific debate to which it is addressed. But each Talk is also designed to propagate the spirit of the Battle of Ideas, and to give members of the public a taste of the kind of discussion and intellectual engagement that they can expect during the festival itself. Each Port Talk is free and open to the public, and will take place in the convivial and unique setting provided by Goodenough College in central London
